For auto repair
Tapping Tags for auto repair shops
A stand at the service counter, and a card handed over with the keys at pickup.
An auto repair customer's best moment for a review is the one where they get their car back, not the one where they drop it off worried about the bill. Build placement around pickup, not intake.
Recommended format and placement
- Service counter: the acrylic stand at the counter where customers pay and pick up their keys, visible while they wait for the invoice to print.
- Handed over with the keys: a card given directly to the customer at pickup, alongside the keys and the invoice, so it travels home with them if they do not tap it on the spot.
How many you need
One stand per service counter or cashier station, plus a stack of cards kept at the same counter for staff to hand over at every pickup.
When to present it
At vehicle pickup, when the customer is paying and getting their keys back, not at drop-off. At drop-off the customer is often stressed about what is wrong with the car and has no opinion yet about the repair; at pickup they have a finished job, a working vehicle, and a receipt in hand, which is the actual experience worth asking about.
The policy-safe way to ask
Google's guidelines allow a repair shop to share its review link or a QR code with customers, and prohibit discounting a future service in exchange for a review, and prohibit only handing the card to customers whose repair was small or simple. For an auto shop, that means:
- Every customer picking up a vehicle gets the same card or the same mention of the stand, regardless of repair size or bill amount.
- Never offer a discount on the next oil change or service for leaving a review.
- If a repair took longer than promised or cost more than quoted, resolve that with the customer directly rather than deciding not to offer them the card - deciding who gets asked based on how the job went is exactly what the guidelines prohibit.
